The Springbok (pronounced / sprin-bäk/) (Antidorcas marsupialis) is a medium sized antelope found primarily in southern and southwestern Africa. The only member of the genus Antidorcas, the German zoologist Eberhard August Wilhelm von Zimmermann described this bovid in 1780. Three subspecies are identified. Both genders have a pair of black, 35-to-50-centimetre (14 to 20 in) long horns that arch backwards.
Active mostly at dawn and twilight, springbok kind harems (interracial-gender herds). In earlier times, Springbok of Karoo and the Kalahari desert would migrate in large numbers across the countryside, a practice called trekbokken. A characteristic unique to the Springbok is pronking, where the Springbok performs multiple jumps into the air, up to 2 metres (6.6 feet) above the earth, in a stiff-legged position, with the back bowed and the white flap lifted. Principally a browser, the Springbok feeds on succulents and shrubs; this antelope can live without drinking water for years, through eating succulent plant life fulfilling its conditions. Mating takes place year round, and summits in the rainy season, when forage is plentiful. One calf is born after a long five to six month pregnancy; the calf leaves its mom a month or two afterwards and weaning happens at almost six months of age,.
Springbok inhabit the dry regions of south and southwestern africa. There are not any major risks to the long term survival of the species; the springbok, actually, is among the few antelope species considered to have an enlarging population. They can be popular game creatures, and are valued for their meat and skin.
